HOW RARA LAKE WAS FORMED
The beautiful Rara Lake in Mugu district was once a valley. One day a hermit came to the village and begged the villagers for food but a foolish woman gave him instead of a handful of ash.
The hermit turned back at once, going the way he had come, telling all the good people who had given him alms to go up the mountain. He went up the mountain himself and then with a blow of his hand, he broke his tumbler and the water in it ran down the slope. There was an unending flow of water until the village was submerged and the whole valley became a lake.

Mugu (Mugum) is a small village established around 800 years ago, it’s located in the Mugu district of Karnali Zone of Nepal. The northwest border of Nepal and Tibet. it’s around 53 km from the Mugu district headquarter and around 30 km from the Baryang, Kelag. in the shadow of Mount Kailash Tibet. The first settlement Mugu (old village) is much older. During the fourth generation of Yatse or Khos dynasty, the Karacalla period.

Hidden Himalaya - Humla and Mugu , Nepal
Humla district, one of Nepal’s highest and most inaccessible district, is located in the far northwest of Nepal and has a population of around 45,000 living in scattered enclaves in the lower valleys of the Himalayas, between 1500-7300m altitude. Simikot, the district headquarters (indicated with the yellow dot in the map below), has a dirt airstrip that lands only a few flights per week in good weather.
The closest road-head in Nepal to Humla is nine days walk to the south; and from Tibet six days walk away to the northeast. These isolated mountain communities rely on subsistence farming and minimal trade with Tibet and India.

Mugu : The Conscience of karnali
The Conscience of Karnali looks at the status of development in the Mugu district of Karnali. The film raises questions on where issues such as employment, technology, education and health stand amidst a largely isolated community in a highly globalised world. The film is a visual journey across a long and arduous trek to some of the most remote villages in Nepal and an interaction with the locals and what they would like to see happening. Development will perhaps eventually come in, but then, what exactly are we looking for when we think of 'developing' a place?

Nepal, the Himalayan country is naturally beautiful. Mugu is a part of it known as Karnali. Mugu is known for being both the most remote district in Nepal, as well as the least developed. The average life of Mugu is 47 years, whereas male has 49 and female has 39. Literacy rate is 27 % and especially the Female.

Mugu, one of the poorest districts in Nepal, doesn’t have a single football stadium. But it does have a star football player as revered as Argentina’s famous son Lionel Messi – and she happens to be a girl.Sunakali and her team were welcomed home there after winning the women’s national football tournament as if they had won the World Cup in Brazil.
These young women left their mountainous district for the first time to compete in the tournament in Kailali, a journey of hundreds of kilometers. They walked two days to reach the airstrip, and travelled in a plane, rickshaw and bullock cart for the very first time in their lives. There are no direct roads between Kailali and Mugu, and the ones that do exist are in poor condition.
