Mustang feels quite different to the rest of the Nepal Himalaya, and geologically speaking it is different. This is the Transhimalaya, a parched piece of ancient seabed thrust skywards and marooned in the monsoon rain shadow north of the main Himalayan range. In culture and topography, Mustang has more in common with the Ngari region of western Tibet than other parts of Nepal.

A Gift for the Village - A Documentary Film

In 2007, a team of 7 friends from the United States embarked on an amazing journey.

Carrying High Definition Video Cameras and an artist's masterpiece, they flew to Kathmandu, Nepal and beyond.

This is a story of a remarkable collaboration between a respected Buddhist teacher named Amchi Tsampa Ngawang Lama and a painter from Blacksburg, Virginia named Jane Lillian Vance, and of the gifts exchanged between two cultures half a world apart, but linked by friendship and common cause.

The film tells the stories of these two remarkable people, and takes the viewer along as a new kind of thangka, or lineage painting, begins its journey from the Appalachian Mountains to the Himalayas, where a festival celebrates its arrival.

The film team made its way to the town of Jomsom, the gateway to the region called Upper Mustang, and then trekked 150 miles into the restricted area of Lo, where they visited newly discovered cave paintings and met the last hereditary King of Lo, whose blessing they sought for the project. The crew documented the changing way of life in this remote region, as electricity, roads, and running water make life easier, while changing an ancient way of living.

Narrated by Public Radio's Lisa Mullins.

The film is dedicated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and to Morgan Dana Harrington, a student of Jane Vance's who was abducted and murdered during the time this film was undergoing production.

Cave People of the Himalaya | National Geographic Documentary

In the 1990s, a high Himalayan cave in Upper Mustang, Nepal was discovered to contain 42 ancient people, buried on wooden bunk beds. American archaeologist Dr. Mark Aldenderfer believes there must be more burial caves, but the challenge is how to find them deep within cliff faces in the cold and inhospitable environment of the Himalaya.

He enlists the world's best technical climbers to do the searching. Aldenderfer's theory is the funerary caves were carved out by the earliest people to have settled in the Himalaya. If he can find their remains and extract their DNA, he'll learn who these people were and what brought them to the toughest parts of the planet to live.

An estimated 10,000 of the caves have been found in the former Kingdom of Mustang in North, Central Nepal.

Hidden within the Himalayas, 155ft from the ground, these man-made caves are one of the World's greatest archaeological mysteries.

Thousands of holes are carved into the fragile, sandy-coloured cliff in a gorge so large it dwarfs the Grand Canyon.

The astonishing number of caves, some dug into the cliffside, others tunnelled from above are thousands of years old but who built them and why remains a mystery.
